Your Guide to Year-Round Lincoln City Oregon Things to Do!
The central Oregon coast offers a variety of activities: miles of public beaches, fishing charters and guides, golf courses, shopping, historical sites, museums, wineries, shellfish harvesting, hang gliding, surfing, kayaking, public parks, hiking trails, bike trails, historic covered bridges, magnificent lighthouses, festivals and many popular events.
Known as the kite capital of the world, Lincoln City receives steady winds, making it a favorite destination for wind surfers. Lincoln City is located in Oregon's coastal region between Devils Lake and 7 miles of sandy beaches that are well-known for beach combing, tide pooling during low tides, beach hiking, surfing, boating, crabbing and fishing. Whatever your interest, you'll find Lincoln City to be a great location from which to venture out in different directions to explore both the coast and wine country.
Central Oregon Coast Museums and History
Visit the North Lincoln County Historical Museum (4.5 mi), to learn how the community developed and how the Native Americans and white settlers lived many years ago. The archive houses a rotating exhibit of special showings dedicated to other eras in the region's history. Also of both historic interest, and for their beauty and the story they tell of an earlier era, you will find several remarkable central Oregon Coast light houses and covered bridges within a short drive from Lincoln City.
Fun at Lincoln City Beach
Beachcombing: Beachcombers will find beautiful driftwood, agates, shells, sea creatures, fishing boat equipment, and if you're lucky, a Japanese fishing float shaken loose from the seaweedy depths.
Tidal Pooling: As the tide recedes it leaves behind exposed rocks with many small pools of still salt water. In those pools many colorful, exotic creatures make their homes - starfish, sea anemones and urchins, and tiny fish. There are several good areas to explore tidepools in the Lincoln City area.
Surfing: The Oregon Coast is known for its large surf. Whether you want to paddle out yourself, or just watch, you'll find it great fun. There are many local surf shops if you want to rent a board.
Whale Watching: Every spring and fall thousands of people flock to the Oregon coast to watch the Pacific gray whales that are on migrations of their own. Good spots in Lincoln City for spotting whales are at Roads End, the NW 21st Street beach access and SW 40th Street. Charter boat companies in nearby Depoe Bay (14.1 mi) are available for those who want to see the great gray whale close up.
Year Round Outdoor Oregon Coast Activities
Oregon Coast Golf: Enjoy a great Lincoln City and Oregon Coast golf vacation at Surftides Inn & Conference Center. Test your game at one of the area's five golf courses, with three golf courses less than ten miles away.
Bike Riding: Bike riders welcome in the marked lanes on many thoroughfares in and around the city, including the length of Highway 101; but one of the most popular rides is the bike lane encircling Devils Lake (1.0 mi). Many off-road opportunities are offered in the hills north, south and east of the city, and there are many unsurfaced logging roads in the area.
Bird Watching: Nature's topographic mix of sea, beach, marshlands, coastal forests, hills and rocky cliffs combine to create an ideal habitat for bird watching. The Lincoln City area is home to a breathtaking range of fliers, from a majestic peregrine falcon to a delicate murre.
Fishing: Take your pick of places to fish: freshwater streams or salty waves, river or bay or lake. The freshwater fishing favorite in North Lincoln County are Devils Lake (1.0 mi), the Salmon and Siletz Rivers as well as Schooner Creek and Drift Creek. Salmon anglers regularly land fish of 50 pounds or more on the Siletz Rivers. If lake and stream fishing sounds too tame, head out to sea on a sport fishing charter boat or cast your line from the rocky shore. Nearby Depoe Bay (14.1 mi) is home to a fleet of fishing excursion boats with experienced crews to help you catch the trophy of your dreams.
Wine Tasting - Winery Tours: Overlooking the Devil's Punchbowl, near Newport, the Flying Dutchman (19.6 mi) is the only working winery on Oregon's coast. In their tasting room, you can see the barrels in the back. Their picnic area, behind the tasting room, overlooks stunning local ocean activity. East of Lincoln City on Highway 99 is the Willamette Valley, where some of Oregon's best grapes are grown. Take a driving tour of many nearby wineries, stop in and sample some vintages and meet the special people of the Oregon Wine Industry.
Popular Stops: Several "can't miss" attractions are short drives from Surftides Inn & Conference Center. Be sure to make some time for them: The Connie Hansen Garden (0.4 mi), Depoe Bay Aquarium (12.2 mi), Devil's Punchbowl State Park (19.6 mi), Oregon Coast Aquarium (28.9 mi), Sea Lion Caves (76.1 mi)
